Services offered by the programs:
The management of a trauma patient can be quite challenging and complex as the
needs are multi-faceted. MCH trauma consists of many surgical, medical,
nursing, rehabilitation and psychosocial specialists who provide highly
specialized trauma expertise to the children and their families. They work
closely together in an interdisciplinary manner to ensure that care is
well-coordinated and of high quality. The interprofessional care is
individualized to meet the specific needs of the patient, given their age,
stage of development and pre-morbid psychosocial and academic history. As part
of the provincial trauma network, the Programs work closely with the Société de
l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ), and will assist families in opening
claim dossiers.
Clinical Care offered by the programs:
Our highly skilled team of experts care for children and teens suffering from a
wide variety of injuries including skull fractures, diffuse axonal injuries,
intra-cerebral haemorrhages, cerebral contusions, concussions, severely broken
bones, spinal trauma, burns, severe chest, abdominal and pelvic injuries, eye
traumas and dental traumas. Many of these result from car collisions, sports,
falls, abuse, assault, fire, frostbite, near drowning, caustic ingestions and
poisonings, etc. Patients and their families are cared for in an
interdisciplinary manner.
The trauma coordinators (Neurotrauma Program, Trauma Program, Burn Trauma
Program) work directly with patients and families daily. They play key roles
linking all specialties involved in the child's care, thereby ensuring that:
-
a comprehensive interdisciplinary and coordinated treatment plan is in place
-
protocols are followed in a timely and effective manner
-
parents receive consistent information from the moment that the child arrives
through the acute and early rehabilitation phases
-
transfer to appropriate rehabilitation centres or other community resources is
completed.
