According to Health Canada, each year 500,000 children in Canada (10% of the
population aged 18 years and under) injure themselves severely enough to stop
their current activity or to consult medical services. More kids and teens are
hospitalized or die from preventable injury than from any other cause. Many
people are under the misconception that injuries are accidents and that they
cannot be avoided. Researchers estimate that 90% of unintentional injuries
could be prevented. "Accidents" imply an act of fate; trauma care experts know
that this is not the reality of most trauma. The key point is that we can and
must do something about it. The best form of treatment is prevention!
